2014 We Day in Minnesota Event!

What's We Day? Youth coming together to make the world a better place. Each year, We Day hosts a series of stadium-sized events, one of which will take place in St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center on Wednesday, Nov. 12. We Day brings together world-renowned speakers and performers—from Lt. Colonel Eileen Collins to Malala Yousafzai to Shapeshift—with tens of thousands of youth to kick-start a year of action through We Act. You can’t buy a ticket to We Day—you earn it by taking on one local and one global action. Hope to see you there!

Minnesota Teacher Receives $25,000 National Milken Educator Award

Angela Harvala, a fifth-grade teacher at Princeton's North Elementary School, was surprised by the Milken Family Foundation as Minnesota’s latest recipient of the prestigious Milken Educator Award. The national award recognizes outstanding excellence in education and includes a $25,000 cash prize. Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius and Dr. Jane Foley, foundation senior vice president for the Milken Educator Awards, were among the leaders participating in the surprise celebration.

Facts and Information About Ebola

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is working with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to provide information about the Ebola virus to schools. And though, officials and health experts continue to stress that the risk to Minnesotans is currently very low, Governor Dayton and and MDH Commissioner Ehlinger have convened leaders in the health, human services and public safety sectors to develop prevention and, if needed, rapid response plans for our state. Calling All Kid Filmmakers!

90-second Newbery film competition logo

Entries into Minnesota’s 90-Second Newbery Film Festival Now Being Accepted! Kid filmmakers of all ages are invited to submit their most creative ideas into a film that compresses the entire story of a Newbery-winning book into about ninety seconds. Teachers, Librarians, Media Specialists and Parents are encouraged to visit the 90-Second Newbery website to learn more. Deadline for submitting films is December 20, 2014!
