Minnesota Department of Education Announces 2015 Celebration Schools

Classroom of engaged students


Twenty-two schools are being recognized as Celebration schools for their efforts to increase student achievement. This year, 157 schools applied for the honor. The department selects schools based on their ability to effectively document best practices that have led to student success to receive the Celebration school recognition. Celebration-eligible schools are identified annually.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration!

Governor Dayton's Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is hosting their annual celebration event at the Ordway Center on January 18, 2016. The Power of Telling Your Story: 30 Years of Us. Remarks by Gov. Dayton, Lt. Gov. Smith, keynote address by Talila A. Lewis, Emcee Pete Rhodes. The event is free and open to the public. Youth Rally at 9a.m, event program begins at 11:00 and concludes at 1 p.m. Free transit passes to the event available beginning Jan. 11 from Metro Transit. Visit us on FB for more.


What Does a Humpback Whale Eat?

Logan Google chats with Dr. Welsh's 7th grade class about his upcoming Antarctic adventure


You can find out the answer to that and what Logan Pallin packed in preparation for four months in Antarctica where he will be researching the effect of climate change on humpback whales. A former student at Cloquet Middle School, Logan returned via Google chat to share his love of science and his latest adventure with Dr. Welsh's seventh-grade class. Read more in the Pine Journal.

At the end of December, getSTEM had connected more business folks to classrooms than in any time in our history – just under 10,000 students! In addition, the number of connection of businesses to classrooms increased by nearly 40 percent, but your help is needed to keep the momentum going! There was excitement in the air during Computer Science Week. Over 500 Minnesota schools signed on to participate in Hour of Code activities. Plan now to attend the Minnesota Safe and Supportive Schools Conference: Addressing Bullying in Schools on January 22, 2016. The conference will help educators, school support staff, student leaders and community members build on their knowledge about bullying prevention and creating positive school climates. The School Safety Technical Assistance Center is hosting the conference in partnership with PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and Hamline University’s School of Education. Physics Circus Brings Large-Scale Stunts and Physics Fun to the Public

The Physics Force is a successful and entertaining outreach program of the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering. Each year the group of high school teachers and physics professors performs for more than 25,000 school-age kids at its annual week of daytime shows. The goal? Demonstrating that physics is fun, interesting and understandable.

Join the fun on Thursday, Jan. 14, 7 p.m. at Northrop Aud., 84 Church Street SE, Mpls. The show is free, but registration is required.
