First Ever Gold of Distinction Award! 

Keliher students harvesting fresh produce

 

Kelliher elementary and secondary schools were honored as Gold of Distinction awardees for the HealthierUS School Challenge. They are the only school in the country to achieve this award level under the USDA’s new criteria. An action-packed, school-wide event is planned for Thursday, November 19 to celebrate! Friends, neighbors and media are invited to an assembly in the school gymnasium at noon, featuring a cheering contest, a dance-off, skits and award ceremony. Speakers include: USDA's Midwest regional administrator Tim English, MDE assistant commissioner Daron Korte, MDH assistant division director Chris Tholkes and Kelliher superintendent Tim Lutz. Tribal Nations Conference

On November 5, the White House hosted the annual Tribal Nations Conference. President Obama and Cabinet officials discussed issues of importance to tribal leaders. Youth delegates also participated in the conference, sharing a unique perspective. During the conference, the Departments of Education and the Interior announced grants awards to bolster educational programs for the Tribal Education Department (TED) program. $700,000 in grants were awarded to four tribal nations to strengthen their education departments and develop curriculum to meet students’ unique academic and cultural needs. Receiving TED funding, are: •Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, MI. ($300,000) •Leech Lake Band, Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, MN. ($200,000)
•Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, MS.($150,000)
•The Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Okla. ($50,000)


A Night of Play and Learning

On two recent evenings, the Minnesota Children's Museum in St. Paul opened its doors to approximately 1,000 Head Start and Early Head Start children and their families. The evening sessions were part of regular Head Start family nights hosted by the museum each year. Through a partnership with all Head Start locations within the seven-county metro area, the museum is also offering hands-on professional development workshops for teachers. Happy 50th Anniversary

On this day 50 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Higher Education Act into law. At the signing, Johnson spoke of the bill as the key that would unlock the door to education for millions of Americans. Read U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan statement.


Celebrating 40 Years of IDEA

This month, our nation marks the 40th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), signed by President Gerald Ford. This law represents a landmark civil rights measure that has helped to give all children the opportunity to develop their talents and contribute to their communities.
