Public Listening Sessions

Pre-K students in classroom

Minnesota Education Commissioner was in Duluth recently to host a listening session on early learning and other investments made in Governor Dayton’s 2015 budget proposal. The listening sessions are a means of seeking input from the the community. One critical investment he is proposing is $343 million ensure an estimated 47,000 students have access to free, all-day, high-quality Pre-K -- and provide every child with access to the excellent start they need to succeed in school.

Young Head Start Participant Eagerly Reading Her New Book


Minnesota’s regional library systems are working with Once Upon a Reader on a pilot program designed to encourage young children and their caregivers to read together. As part of the pilot year program, each Head Start student in Minnesota will receive a copy of Moo! A joy-ride of a book written by a local author and illustrated by a local artist. Minnesota China Teacher Exchange

The Hangzhou Foreign Language School in Hangzhou, China invites applications from teachers to teach in its highly regarded language school in China for 2015-2016. Minnesota licensed K-12 teachers in any content area with native or native-like English skills are eligible to apply and teach for either a semester or full academic school year.

Teachers teach conversational English skills and share American culture while learning about Chinese culture. Teachers receive compensation and are provided with living arrangements. Learn more about the Hangzhou Foreign Language School.


Minnesota, One of Only Four States to Present Comprehensive Inclusion of Engineering for K-12 Students

A study aimed at improving engineering education in public schools found that only a dozen states clearly define and lay out engineering curricula for K-12 students in their science standards, and only four of these states (Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Oregon) present a "comprehensive" inclusion of engineering. Researchers are trying to improve engineering education in public schools to address a national need for highly skilled engineers for the workforce. Read Purdue University Study.

Investing in Universal Pre-K and Child Care

In a cozy home in St. Paul's Frogtown neighborhood, preschool-age children fidget and giggle as they show off counting skills in Hmong and Spanish.
