CHISHOLM — It’s helpful to have a sense of humor, to share laughs, even, when it comes to discussing complex issues without clear-cut answers.
Issues, such as how to retain and attract young people to the Iron Range, especially with the current and upcoming shift in the age of workers in the region.
Laughter — along with conversation on topics important to young people in the area — will be a part of Saturday’s first-of-its kind event on the Range: “Comedy, Cocktails and a Little Bit of Policy.”
The evening of discussion and comedy, which will be held at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm, is an inaugural gathering of the grassroots group ReGen, which consists of area adults ages 20 to 40.
It will be an 18-plus event, with IDs required at the door. Cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the show starting at 7 p.m. Beer and wine will be served to the 21-plus crowd.
A four-member panel consisting of Tony Sertich, president of the Northland Foundation, Roy Smith, director of Workforce Development for IRRRB, Selah Reid, owner of The Shop Coffeehouse in Virginia, and Summer Scharringhausen, program manager of the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids, will speak about issues relevant to young adults in the area.
Topics will include such things as gaps in the areas of social and lifestyle activities, art and live music, and childcare and housing for middle-income young professionals.
