Hennepin County sets 2015 property tax levy increase at 2.1 percent

Budget evaluation reduces proposed property tax levy by 0.65 percent.

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners today approved its 2015 property tax levy of $695.6 million -- a 2.1 percent increase over 2014.

The proposed budget presented in September called for a property tax levy of just under $700 million. Since then, commissioners trimmed over $4 million during the budget review process to reduce the property tax levy increase to $695.6 million or 2.10 percent.

The approved 2015 budget for Hennepin County is $1,809,790,375.

“Commissioners carefully evaluated projects and programs in the proposed budget,” said Commissioner Jan Callison, chair of the budget and capital investment committee. “I am pleased that we could lower the property tax levy while planning for the future.”

The 2015 budget includes funding for new initiatives to expand county efficiency and effectiveness, provides new resources for workforce development, and continues support for early childhood and pre-K learning.

“Our 2015 budget continues the county’s history of thoughtful and responsible management,” said Commissioner Mike Opat, chair of the board. “The final product is something in which all residents can take pride.”

In addition to the already planned efforts for 2015, the board asked county staff to evaluate the possibility of a parental leave program and to evaluate funding for food shelves to ensure strategic delivery of food services across the county.
