Hennepin County seeks comments on pedestrian accessibility plan

Public comment period runs through December 31

Hennepin County is seeking input on its draft plan to support accessibility for pedestrians on its road network. The document, called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan, presents current practices and policies that relate to accessibility, and identifies an inventory of existing county road network facilities supporting accessibility at intersections.

The plan details Hennepin County’s evaluation of its road network and identifies the transition plan to bring the county into full compliance with the ADAIt also ties into broader efforts to support healthy communities that include motorists, cyclists, transit users and pedestrians.

Hennepin County has made significant efforts to improve pedestrian accessibility along sidewalks and at intersections. Most recently along Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis, the county installed accessible pedestrian signals and reconstructed the existing pedestrian ramps that were previously difficult to navigate for disabled persons. The county also replaced more than 250 pedestrian ramps in 2014 and continuously partners with local cities to identify existing crosswalks that warrant improvements.

The plan can be viewed online at www.hennepin.us/adaplan and printed copies are available at all 41 Hennepin County libraries, the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis, and at the county’s public works facility in Medina. Comments can be submitted in writing via email to adaplan@hennepin.us or by mail to Jason Pieper, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340.

After the comment period ends on December 31, a revised plan will be presented to the county board of commissioners for consideration early in 2015.
