County board actions for September 11

Board adopts maximum property tax levy, sets public hearings about levy and budget

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved a maximum property-tax levy for 2015 of $699.9 million – 2.75 percent higher than the 2014 levy. The impact of the proposed maximum property tax levy, along with the proposed property tax levies for the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, results in an approximate increase in property taxes of $36 or 3.8 percent for a median valued home. Board approves payment and reissue of bonds

The board approved $182,675,000 in new and refunded bonds. $100 million will be issued as new money bonds to provide financing for capital improvements included in the county’s capital improvement plan, including library and road projects. The remainder is existing bonds that are being consolidated to simplify accounting and management of the bonds and will approximately $80,000 in issuance costs without adverse impact to interest rates.

Board appoints two members to Nine-Mile Creek Watershed District Board

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners appointed Corrine Lynch – Eden Prairie (incumbent) and Jodi Peterson – Bloomington (incumbent) to the Nine-Mile Creek Watershed District Board. The five member board is responsible for the developing and updating a water management plan.

Board accepts additional funding for redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes

The board approved an agreement amendment for an additional $600,000 in funding from Minnesota Housing and Finance for redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes in the City of Brooklyn Park. The funds are part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Neighborhood Stabilization Program 1. 

Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force

The board approved a renewal of a co-operative agreement for the Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force for seven more years. The agreement is between the Hennepin County Sheriff and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Golden Valley, and Richfield.

The Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force was formed in February 2007 for the purpose of cooperation and collaboration among member law enforcement agencies. The mutual goal is targeting violent and repeat offenders by sharing resources and information. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are participating members of the task force.

Pedestrian improvements in Brooklyn Park

The board approved an agreement with the City of Brooklyn Park for pedestrian curb ramp reconstruction on Noble Parkway (County Road 12), Zane Avenue North (County Road 14) and 85th Avenue North (County Road 109). The intersection reconstruction is part of a City of Brooklyn Park project that is resurfacing Edinbrook Terrace and Regent Avenue North including the reconstruction of the pedestrian curb ramps. The county will share the costs for the pedestrian improvements at these intersections – estimated at $10,000.
