Commissioner Higgins appointed to national leadership position on human services

Hennepin County Commissioner Linda Higgins was appointed to a one-year term as chair of the National Association of Counties (NACo) education, children and families subcommittee.

“I am excited to chair the education, children and families subcommittee and to work with Ramsey County Commissioner Toni Carter, who is the chair of the human services and education steering committee,” said Commissioner Linda Higgins. “These are important issues faced by counties across the country.”

As chair of the education, children and families subcommittee, Commissioner Higgins will engage with the federal administration in developing policy on a number of issues facing counties.

Commissioner Higgins was a Minnesota State Senator from 1997 to 2012. While a member of the Senate she chaired the public safety budget division, state and local government, elections committees and served on the capital investment, environment and natural resources, finance, and health and human services committees. She has also served on the NACo steering committee for human services and the education committee and serves as a member of NACo's large urban county caucus.

The subcommittee reports to the human services and education steering committee. The human services and education steering committee is responsible for NACo policy on all matters pertaining to children's issues, foster care, public assistance and income support, services to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, immigration policy, social services and education.
