Commissioner McLaughlin appointed to national leadership position on transportation

Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin was appointed to a one-year term as chair of the National Association of Counties (NACo) transportation steering committee.

“It is an honor to lead NACo’s transportation steering committee because counties play a critical role in the nation’s transportation system,” said Commissioner Peter McLaughlin. “Counties own and maintain the greatest share of America’s road miles and are the stewards of more than a third of our transit systems and airports.”

Commissioner McLaughlin is a leader on transportation issues in Hennepin County as well as the Twin Cities metropolitan area. He serves as the chair of the County Transit Improvement Board, is the chair of the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and advocates for transportation and transit issues in the region.

The transportation steering committee is responsible for NACo policy on all matters pertaining to federal transportation legislation, funding and regulation and its impacts on county government. This includes highway and bridge development, finance and safety, public transit development and finance, transportation planning, airport development and service, passenger and freight railroads, ports and waterways, freight movement, and research and development of new modes of transportation.

McLaughlin has been a subcommittee chair and vice chair of the NACo community and economic development committee, the international economic development task force, and the transportation committee.  He has also served as vice chair on NACo’s large urban county caucus steering committee.
