County board actions for July 29

August is child support awareness month

The board proclaimed August 2104 as child support awareness month to recognize the staff who work in the child support program. Hennepin County staff, the County Attorney’s Office and the Fourth Judicial Court serve more than 71,000 children each year by establishing paternity, locating parents, setting up child support orders, collecting child support payments, providing employment and parenting resources and enforcing court-ordered financial obligations that help families become and remain self-sufficient and financially stable. More than $102 million is collected each year and for each dollar spent by the county, $10 is collected for children.

Members appointed to Riley-Purgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District Board

The board appointed Mary Bisek of Minnetonka and John Perry Forster of Eden Prairie to the Riley-Purgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District Board. They will serve a three-year term on the board. Four of the board’s five members are appointed by Hennepin County and the fifth by Carver County. The board serves an area that includes the cities of Chanhassen, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Deephaven and Shorewood.

Board approves county land to be used for trail

The board approved for Three Rivers Park District to use county land in Corcoran as a trailhead for the Lake Independence Regional Trail. The trail connects the cities of Orono, Medina, Corcoran and Hanover. Three Rivers will be responsible for all improvements and maintenance. The land is currently vacant.

Board approves school recycling grants

The board approved a $25,979 school recycling grant for Wayzata Public Schools and another for St. Louis Park Public Schools for $11,950. The grants are used to grow recycling and organics recycling in schools, and help the county move toward its goals of recycling 45 percent of waste and six percent of organics by 2015. The county awarded seven other grants for school recycling and organics recycling programs. For more information visit the county website.

Board approves deconstruction services that will divert 85 percent of waste

The board approved a contract with The Network for Better Futures to provide deconstruction services from August 2014 through July 2016. The Network for Better Futures will deconstruct up to 25 residential buildings and divert 85 percent of the buildings waste for reuse or recycling. The contract amount is not to exceed $464,000 and is expected to create at least seven full-time jobs. The Network for Better Futures hires high-risk men with histories of imprisonment, substance abuse, mental illness, chronic unemployment, and homelessness, and provides them with access to employment, housing, health care and community re-engagement.

County to host a Minnesota GreenCorps member

The board approved an agreement with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to host a member from Minnesota GreenCorps from September 2014 through August 2015. The member will work on implementing reuse and recycling programs at apartments and student dormitories. Minnesota GreenCorps is a statewide program and is part of AmeriCorps. Salary and benefits are funded by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
