August 13: Met Council / HCRRA joint hearing
The Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authorityand the Met Council will consider the two memoranda of understanding between the Metropolitan Council and the City of Minneapolis regarding ownership of the Kenilworth freight corridor and the City-requested changes to the preliminary design plan. Residents will be invited to testify. 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Minneapolis Central Library’s Pohlad Hall, 300 Nicollet Mall, in Minneapolis. Click here for more information.
August 19: Hennepin County municipal consent vote
The Hennepin County Board will consider the newly revised preliminary design for the SWLRT project in Minneapolis on August 19 immediately after the regularly scheduled committee meetings. Find the County Board Calendar here.

to Chair Active Living Hennepin County partnership
Marion Greene,
Chair of the Board’s Health and Human Services Committee, has taken a
leadership role in Hennepin County’s Active Living partnership – a group of
cities, non-profits, and developers who work to create healthy communities by
influencing transportation and land use projects. Greene will co-chair the group, and provide
critical support for complete streets, active transportation, placemaking, and
healthy food access.
Greene took part in the group’s meeting about
economic development around bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and is looking forward to September’s partnership
meeting, where attendees will strategize ways to improve access to healthy
food, potentially including community gardens and farmer’s markets. To learn more about Hennepin County's Active Living initiative, click here.
Flooding update: Hennepin County seeks to join disaster declaration
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners voted to request inclusion in a state and federal disaster declaration related to damage from recent heavy rains, and resulting in flooding and landslides. Eight counties were included in a disaster declaration issued on July 21, and on July 29 state officials requested that FEMA add an additional 30 counties, including Hennepin County, to the federal disaster declaration.
 Statewide Primary, August 12
Take part in our democracy: vote in the statewide primary on August 12. Early voting is available until August 11 in the elections office on the skyway level at the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th Street, or vote at St. Louis Park or Minneapolis city halls. Park library closed
The Hennepin County Library at 3240 Library Lane
in St. Louis Park has closed for building upgrades, and is scheduled to re-open
on Saturday, August 30th at 9am. The construction includes improved patron access to computers, two new meeting and study rooms, and other amenities. Patrons who face a barrier to using a
nearby library may contact the library’s At Home Service at 612-543-8850.

National Night Out, August 5
Tomorrow is National Night Out, an annual nationwide event that encourages residents to hold block parties and get to know their neighbors as a way to encourage crime prevention. Enjoy a Minnesota summer evening in Minneapolis or St. Louis Park surrounded by friends and family, and get to know your neighbors! For more information, click here.
 Southwest Light Rail update
On July 8, the Hennepin County Board approved the preliminary design plans for the Southwest Light Rail Transit (SWLRT) project serving the cities of Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins, and St. Louis Park.
The City of Minneapolis and the Metropolitan Council reached a tentative agreement that changed the preliminary design plans for the route through Minneapolis. Release by the Metropolitan Council of this new plan resets the timetable for municipal approval and requires additional hearings and votes by the city and Hennepin County for the route in Minneapolis.

 July 17
Board Approves healthy options policy
The county will now offer healthier food choices in vending machines in our buildings and at our sponsored events, part of an effort to encourage healthy food choices as a means to prevent chronic disease for employees and visitors. A nutrition policy and nutritional guidelines will be part of food vending contracts, and will apply to county sponsored meetings and events.

August is child support awareness month
We have proclaimed August 2014 as child support awareness month to recognize the staff who work in the child support program. Hennepin County staff, the County Attorney’s Office and the Fourth Judicial Court serve more than 71,000 children each year by establishing paternity, locating parents, setting up child support orders, collecting child support payments, providing employment and parenting resources and enforcing court-ordered financial obligations that help families become and remain self-sufficient and financially stable. More than $102 million is collected each year and for each dollar spent by the county, $10 is collected for children.
 Board approves school recycling grants
St. Louis Park public schools are the recipient of a grant to encourage recycling and composting. School programming is how we will meet our goals to recycle 45 percent of waste and six percent of organics by 2015. For more information visit the county website.

Board approves deconstruction services that will divert waste from landfills
We've established a contract with The Network for Better Futures to deconstruct up to 25 residential buildings and divert 85 percent of the waste from landfills for reuse or recycling. The Network for Better Futures hires high-risk men with histories of imprisonment, substance abuse, mental illness, chronic unemployment, and homelessness, and provides them with access to employment, housing, health care and community re-engagement. We hope this exciting contract is the start of something which becomes self-sustaining.

are made, and the topics are subject to change. Board briefings occur in the
board room on the 24th floor of the Hennepin County Government Center and are
