Market and development analysis completed

Northeast is growing and getting younger according to a market and development analysis conducted as part of the Lowry Avenue planning process. The number of residents aged 25-34 has increased nearly 20 percent since 2000 and now makes up almost one-quarter of the population.

housing

More than 4,000 new residents and 1,500 new households are forecast by 2030. Since 2003, new development resulted in 542 new housing units and 35,000 square feet of new commercial space. Less than one percent of all rental units were vacant as of the end of 2013.

This data will be used during the conceptual design of the six study intersections; Marshall Street, 2nd Street, University Avenue, Washington Street, Monroe Street and Central Avenue.

Students help shape future of Lowry Avenue northeast

Edison Student

The artist collaborative Floodplain Collective met with Edison High School students to visually explore their experience along Lowry Avenue. The students, all English language learners, mapped "what I love and hate" about the corridor.

The students were excited to have an opportunity to share their perspective. They expressed frustration with the infrequency of the local buses, length of time between transfers and lack of adequate shelter at bus stops.

"I like the bus because it takes me to school. I hate it because I have to wait a long time," said one of the students.

Their important feedback will help the project better understand the priorities of young people in the corridor.

Other recent community engagement efforts have included Hotdish Revolution, outreach to northeast business owners and a handful of neighborhood meetings.

Save the date: June 11 public workshop

Hennepin County is hosting a second public workshop for the Lowry Avenue northeast plan on Wednesday, June 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization.

Hear ideas on circulation improvements and redevelopment scenarios that could enhance the six study intersection areas. The workshops are designed to share corridor information and gather ideas from residents, businesses, and others who use the corridor.

CE

Lowry Avenue Community Works will be at several northeast Minneapolis community events throughout the spring and summer. Watch the project webpage for more details.

Spring cleanup season is here

Compostable

  • grass clippings and sod
  • logs, trees and stumps
  • both indoor and outdoor plants
  • mulch and wood chips.

Compostable bags are required for collection of yard waste from your home. Disposing of yard waste with garbage is prohibited.
