Creative Care: Art + Healing in the Twin Cities

Special programming is scheduled in conjunction with the final month of the exhibit, Creative Care: Art + Healing in the Twin Cities, a first-of-its-kind exhibition produced by Hennepin County’s Multicultural Arts Committee and Forecast Public Art, a nonprofit public art consulting agency.

January 14
Arts and Eating Disorders
Lecture, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Government Center Auditorium

Explore ways in which art and ritual can be vehicles for healing others and the self from addictions to food and extreme expectations of flawlessness.

Presenters: Bevie LaBrie, M.A., Art Therapist; Tamar Melmed Marmor, M.P.S., A.T.R., and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

January 21
Arts and the Mind (Part 2: The Art of Connection), followed by a panel discussion
Screening, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Government Center Auditorium

This is a screening of the popular PBS Arts & the Mind program, followed by a panel discussion. The program explores the vital role the arts play in human development during both youth and old age.  Performers profiled in the series will be on hand, including members of KAIROS ALIVE!

January 28
Arts and Health: Creative Care Forum, moderated by Jack Becker
Closing Event, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Government Center Auditorium

Featured presenters:

Gary A. Christenson, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Boynton Health Service, University of Minnesota; will present “Why we need the arts in medicine and public health,” including arts used in medical education, for therapeutic interventions, to improve patient experience and for public health and provider well-being.

Richard Bonk, Float Tank Consultant, The Wellness Center, will share information about the healing properties of float tanks and ways they’ve been used to enhance creativity.

Sheryl VanderPol, artist, will talk about her work with local and international communities using her I AM Mosaic process.  She explores the way energy is held—within places, materials, and our senses of smell, feeling, taste and sight.

Visit the exhibition in the Hennepin County Government Center, A Level, which features many artistic disciplines and approaches to healing.  The exhibition runs through January 29, 2014, in the Hennepin Gallery, on the lower level of the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 S. 6th Street, in downtown Minneapolis.  Walk the floor labyrinth by the exhibition.
