This video demonstrates how El Colegio, a bilingual charter school in south Minneapolis that repurposed an old grocery store on Bloomington Avenue to be a school and community asset. They turned an old loading dock with contaminated dirt into a recreational space with a soccer field, basketball court, garden, and patio/outdoor classroom. El Colegio leveraged a variety of funds to build this in a way that produces almost no storm water runoff by combining $345,023 from Hennepin County’s Environmental Response Funds, $118,500 from the County’s Youth Sports Grants, and $124,362 from a Low Impact Development grant from the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District.

The board authorized the chair of the board and county administrator to sign master banking agreements with US Bank NA and Wells Fargo Bank NA. Earlier this year, Hennepin County released a request for proposal (RFP) for banking services that for the first time asked respondents to include information about community presence and responsibility in their commercial and residential lending in Hennepin County. The RFP also included a requirement that any proposing banks submit data and answers to questions about local presence, consumer banking, small business and home mortgage lending practices and results. By responding to the RFP, banks who enter into agreements with the county agree to submit updates to that data during the term of the agreement.
