 On July 11, the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation (HCSF) in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities is proud to host the Annual Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) event. It will take place at the Sheriff’s Water Patrol in Spring Park. The program is designed to engage local law enforcement agencies to teach fishing skills to kids, reinforce personal development and positive life skills, and to connect with the outdoors. Sheriff Stanek reminds everyone that all kids need to connect with caring adults – so take a kid fishing this summer!
 The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Target, hosted active shooter training that featured presentations by Police Chief Michael Kehoe of Newtown, CT, and by Police Officer Sam Lenda of Oak Creek, WI.
Chief Kehoe provided public safety lessons learned from the mass casualty shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary and Officer Lenda discussed the mass casualty shooting at the Sikh Temple. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement officers from 60 agencies from across the state attended the training -- along with community leaders.

 Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek is urging more public awareness and prevention for opiate abuse –which includes the abuse of heroin and prescription painkillers. In Hennepin County in 2012, the number of overdose heroin deaths increased by 85% compared to the previous year.
The Sheriff’s Office is warning parents, educators, health care providers, counselors, and young people to be aware of this issue. They are urging family members to get help for their loved ones who are addicted to any opiate – including painkillers and heroin. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office contributed to a multi-agency investigation which has resulted in eight people facing federal charges. The complex case involved a string of burglaries in which cash was taken from ATMs and prescription drugs were stolen from pharmacies. The crimes took place in several communities including Robbinsdale, Bloomington, Prior Lake, and Circle Pines, MN.
In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, this case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, FBI, the U.S. Secret Service, the Centennial Lakes Police Department, and the Prior Lake Police Department, with cooperation from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force. |
