On January 28, Sheriff Stanek and law enforcement leaders met with President Barack Obama at the White House to discuss mental illness and gun violence. Sheriff Stanek was invited to attend the meeting because of his work as president of the Major County Sheriffs’ Association (MCSA).  Also in attendance was a group of local police chiefs from cities that have been the scenes of recent mass shootings; Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau and the police chiefs from Newtown (CT) and Aurora (CO).

Sheriff Stanek urged President Obama to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Among the comments he made in the discussion with President Obama:

“Gun control alone will not solve the complex problem of guns and extreme violence,” said Sheriff Stanek.   “We have an access problem. Individuals with severe mental illness should never have access to guns.”

There have been approximately one dozen vehicles that have broken through the ice in 2013.  This photo shows a vehicle being towed out of Lake Minnetonka near Big Island.  The driver was not hurt.  Deputies had posted thin ice signs in the area prior to the accident.  The Sheriff's Office is urging residents to avoid channels and pressure ridges of Lake Minnetonka.  These areas are extremely dangerous for all vehicles, snowmobiles, ATVs, and even people on foot.

Hennepin County Sheriff's Deputies Involved In The Inauguration Of President Barack Obama

Deputies in DC

Our Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office personnel represented our agency and the state of Minnesota by working a security detail at the Inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 21, 2013.

The Sheriff’s Office sent 40 deputies and supervisors. They were officially sworn-in as deputy marshals by the US Marshal.  Our personnel were positioned along the parade route about mid-way between the Capitol and the White House near the National Archives.  It is certainly an honor for the Sheriff’s Office to be selected to work at this national event.

This is the third consecutive Presidential inauguration in which the Sheriff’s Office has provided personnel. There were 183 law enforcement officers from throughout Minnesota working at the event. All expenses were paid by the federal government.

Sheriff's Office Analyst Presented With The Crime Analyst Of The Year Award

Congratulations to the Sheriff's Office Criminal Information Sharing and Analysis Unit (CISA). A Sheriff's Office analyst working in the CISA unit was presented with the Crime Analyst of the Year award by the Tri-County Law Enforcement Officers Association. The analyst was instrumental in the conviction of a prolific ring leader who committed identity theft and received a 28 year sentence. Victims of the crimes were located in most jurisdictions in Hennepin County and the surrounding Twin Cities Metro Area.  The CISA information from our analyst showed attention to detail that helped to identify the thief and his crew and helped to find vehicles and map crime locations.
