Newly-released statistics provide an estimate
of crime in the county midyear for 2015. When comparing January-June,
2014 to the first six months in 2015, statistics show that violent crime has
increased 8% countywide.
Violent crime is defined as: murder and manslaughter--non
negligent, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.
“Clearly, this is a red flag. The increase in violent crime has
a negative impact on residents throughout the county,” said Hennepin County
Sheriff Rich Stanek. “I urge community leaders and residents to
prioritize public safety. We all share the responsibility to prevent
crime and partner in keeping our families and neighborhoods safe.”
Nationwide,
several large metro areas are experiencing significant increases in violent
crimes in 2015. Overall, Hennepin County remains one of the nation’s safest
large metro areas with historically low violent crime rates in recent years.
Even so, Sheriff Stanek characterizes the new midyear crime statistics as troubling
– and he has re-directed and re-dedicated resources to target violent offenders
and to address this increasing crime.
Most Wanted suspect captured
Another fugitive on the Hennepin
County Most Wanted list has been captured, thanks to a citizen
tip.
Zachary Kumpula (DOB: 4/28/93) was wanted on 3rd Degree Sexual
Assault charges. He was added to the Most Wanted list after our January warrant
sweep this year which focused on offenders wanted for warrants related to the
sexual abuse of children.
The
Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force and U.S. Marshals personnel located
and arrested Kumpula on August 11th in Minneapolis.
