Proposed 2016 county budget includes 4.5 percent property tax levy increase

Hennepin County Administrator David Hough on Tuesday proposed to the Board of Commissioners a 2016 budget of $1.9 billion, an increase of $109.4 million from last year’s adjusted budget.

The proposed net property tax levy is $726.8 million, an increase of $31.2 million, or 4.48 percent, from the adjusted budget.

The proposed budget represents thoughtful consideration about the current and future needs of Hennepin County,” Hennepin County Administrator David Hough said to the board. “The proposed budget you will consider today and in the coming months, reflects our recommendations on how to best position the county for the future and maintain or enhance our commitment to serve residents.”

In November, property owners will receive a notice that shows the impact of the county maximum levy on their properties, as well as the impact of taxes proposed by other local units of government, such as cities and school districts.

The board is required by state law to adopt a maximum property tax levy in September. Commissioners may later approve a property tax levy that is lower than the approved maximum, but they cannot set it higher than the maximum adopted at the County Board meeting on on September 22.
