Active shooter incidents: Sheriff Stanek attends FBI meeting

On July 23, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek joined senior law enforcement leaders from the United States and Europe, as well as mental health professionals and representatives from faith-based organizations at the FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. to discuss strategies to prevent targeted violence and mass casualty attacks.

The goal of the meeting was to share knowledge about community-based efforts for prevention and intervention.

The summit was hosted by Bipartisan Policy Center in partnership with Rutgers University and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, in collaboration with the FBI, and U.S. Department of Justice.

Most Wanted suspect captured

On July 14, a fugitive on Hennepin County’s Most Wanted List was captured in New Jersey. Alex Yupa, 22, has been featured on the list for nearly two-and-a-half-years on charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Yupa is the fourth fugitive on the Most Wanted List arrested in the past two months.

Acting on information from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service captured Yupa.

“The capture of Alex Yupa is the result of smart investigating and persistence by law enforcement,” said Sheriff Stanek.

Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs

On July 16, the Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, and the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation, hosted  the annual Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs event.  Nearly two dozen kids spent the morning fishing while learning about the importance of making positive life choices.

The event took place at the Sheriff’s Water Patrol Headquarters in Spring Park on Lake Minnetonka.  Nearby marinas donated the use of three pontoon boats for the day. For many of the children, this was their very first time fishing.
