Each month, American City Business Journals crunches economic numbers to rank the strength of 102 metropolitan markets in the United States. In the past year, few markets have climbed the rankings faster than the Twin Cities.
Minneapolis/St. Paul ranks No. 7 overall on the latest list, which includes factors like job growth, unemployment rate and home sales. (Austin, Texas, was No. 1, a position it's gotten used to.) On a media call Wednesday that included U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Citizen Action of Wisconsin released a new report documenting vast differences between Minnesota and Wisconsin in the cost for health insurance on the individual insurance marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act.
The report also compares health insurance individual marketplace rates for Wisconsin’s major metro areas, and reveals major differentials in cost.
The report, A Tale of Two States: Why Wisconsin’s Health Insurance Individual Marketplace Premiums are Dramatically Higher than Minnesota’s, shows that two critical decisions made differently in the two states explain a substantial portion of the rate disparity. [Read More]

Gov. Mark Dayton proclaimed the week of Oct. 20 to be “Minnesota Manufacturers Week,” highlighting the importance of an industry employing one out of every nine workers in Minnesota.
The annual event is designed to educate the public about the role manufacturing plays in the state’s economy and to highlight opportunities for employment in the industry.
“For decades, manufacturing has been a crucial sector of Minnesota’s economy, providing good jobs and living wages for middle class families,” Dayton said in a news release. “I want to thank our state’s manufacturers, and the 300,000 Minnesotans who work hard every day to build the high-quality, innovative and reliable products our global economy demands.” [Read More]

Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon launched a statewide campaign to boost participation in Minnesota’s school breakfast program among low-income students Thursday by taking the matter into her own hands — and a ladle — by serving meals to children at Duluth’s Piedmont Elementary School.
“Hunger is too important for us to ignore,” Prettner Solon said after loading strawberries, cantaloupes and other breakfast treats onto the plates of students making their way along the breakfast line. “Its impact on education too serious to be left unchecked.” [Read More]
