U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visited a Bloomington preschool Monday to praise Minnesota's newest funding increase for early education and to drum up support for President Barack Obama's "Preschool for All" initiative.
In May, Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law a $485 million increase in the state education budget that included more than $170 million for early education programs like all-day kindergarten and preschool. [Read more]
More than 1,080 service members or vets attended the fair, which included booths staffed by 130 employers, 10 educational institutions and about 15 service providers, including Veterans Affairs counselors and state and community agencies.
DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben said the state is committed to improving veterans’ lives, “and that means helping them find meaningful employment.” [Read more]
As Minnesota’s “Hire a Veteran Month” continues, Gov. Mark Dayton announced July also marks the new expansion of eligibility for Minnesota GI Bill benefits. This session Dayton signed a measure designed to give more Minnesota veterans access to the financial aid resources they need to pursue a higher education. For many Minnesota veterans who were previously ineligible for GI Bill benefits, that could mean up to $10,000 to help pay for college or other post-secondary studies.
“Minnesota Veterans have served our state and nation with courage and dedication,” said Dayton. “It is our duty to ensure they have the support they need to get back to work when their service ends. Expanding the GI Bill to all Minnesota Veterans will help Veterans get the education and training they need to find good jobs.” [Read more]

During the past few weeks, the recent legislative session has appropriately been called the “education session.” And it’s true – we made important investments in early education and all-day kindergarten. We also made important funding and policy reforms that will simplify our school funding system, reduce the need for local property taxpayers to subsidize basic school needs, and improve how we measure student progress.
However, the 2013 Legislative Session might be better named “the children’s session,” due to the important progress made not only in education, but in the dozens of other ways this budget will enhance and improve the lives of thousands of Minnesota children. [Read more]

Under Governor Dayton’s leadership, Minnesota already has invested in early education. During the past legislative session, Governor Dayton and the DFL legislature invested $600 million in E-12 education. That includes $40 million for early learning scholarships that will help more than 8,000 Minnesota kids attend high quality childcare and preschool. [Read more]
