September has been a significant month for Veterans, not only in
Minnesota, but nationwide. The passing of General John (Jack) Vessey was
felt by Veterans nationwide. He enlisted in Minnesota as a Private,
received a battlefield commission in WWII and rose to our highest
military position, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS). As CJCS
under President Reagan, he lifted our military up from the dark days
following Vietnam to the undisputed strongest military in the world. A
fond memory I have of Gen. Vessey, was when he visited my office prior
to traveling to California.

The Credit for Military Service in a Combat Zone for service in 2012
will expire for most qualifying service members on October 15, 2016. The
Minnesota Department of Revenue is reminding Minnesota service members
to take advantage of the refundable tax credit before it expires.

military retirement pay (including pensions) may subtract that
retirement pay from their taxable income.

Echoes of War asks Veterans and members of the general public to
consider how Americans memorialize war and military service in public,
and how that relates to the way war gets remembered through the personal
stories and life experiences of Veterans. As part of this project, the
Humanities Center will host an immersive training retreat for ten
Discussion Leaders who will be equipped to host rich conversations in
their own communities and lead two public discussion series in Fall
2016.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the first
recipients of the newly established Support our Troops (SOT) license
plate fund competitive grant program.
- Pets Loyal 2 Vets - $65,000 grant
- Ars Bellum Foundation - $18,515 grant
Since 1993 MDVA has provided
over 90 grants annually to Minnesota Veteran organizations. Historically
these grants were awarded to legislatively directed organizations in
Minnesota to assist Veterans and their families. This year, MDVA
expanded the SOT grant program by offering a new competitive grant
process which now allows additional organizations to apply for funding.
The grants, ranging from $1,000 to $100,000, are focused on supporting
and improving the lives of Veterans and their families.

In
recognition of Veterans Day on Friday Nov. 11, the Minnesota Department of
Veterans Affairs is compiling a list of Veterans Day events around the state.
Community organizers statewide are encouraged to submit event information to
MDVA by Oct. 30 to be included on our website, social media, and distributed to
media throughout Minnesota.
