Desk of the Commissioner - May

Commissioner Shellito

This current month of May has become an intriguing one. The activity here at MDVA has been somewhat quieter than usual. Our approved Veterans Homes construction projects have been funded enabling us to care for our Veteran Residents. I’m very proud of the work that the Homes do and the service they provide our Veterans. I am convinced that should we have more beds available, that we would quickly fill them with Veterans who want to be with fellow Veterans. And, our Programs & Services Division remains as active as ever.

Memorial Day Events

In remembrance and celebration of Memorial Day, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has collected a list of events taking place across the state. To find an event near you visit our Memorial Day Events page.

Armed Forces Day

Many Americans will celebrate Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 21, 2016, but how many of us can say we know what the holiday truly represents? On August 31, 1949, Louis Johnson, then Secretary of Defense, declared the creation of an Armed Forces Day. This one day of recognition was a replacement for the separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The newly created day was also a symbol of unity for the branches of service; all military forces were united under the Department of Defense.

The Telling Project

This year’s Telling: Minnesota 2016 brought another round of Veterans to the stage at the Guthrie Theater April 30 - May 1. This hybrid, three-act play has no intermissions. Rather it is broken up by the cast starting off with stories of joining the military, then each Veteran has a monologue to explain their most definitive experiences in their service, and finally, the play culminates in a more casual, conversational aspect where the Veterans talk about reintegrating to civilian life back home.
