DNR NEWS – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                            June 20, 2014

Most Minnesota state parks and trails will be open this weekend

Despite heavy rain this week that prompted the Department of Natural Resources to close two parks and several campgrounds, most of the 75 state parks and 25 state trails will be open this weekend.

“With some sunshine in the forecast, we hope everyone who has been cooped up indoors this week will take advantage of the nice weather and get out to visit a Minnesota state park or trail,” said Peter Hark, operations manager for the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division.

Hark advises checking the Parks and Trails website at www.mndnr.gov or calling ahead for the most current information before traveling to visit a state park or trail.

Parks that are currently closed include:

  • Blue Mounds State Park in Luverne.
  • Franz Jevne State Park on the Canadian border.

Parks with closed campgrounds that are still open for day use include:

  • Fort Ridgely State Park in Fairfax.
  • Upper Sioux Agency State Park in Granite Falls.

Trails, fishing piers and public water accesses have also been affected by flooding.

People should be especially cautious right now around high water and wear a life jacket. Check for updates online (www.dnr.state.mn.us/watertrails/index.html) before recreating on rivers and contact a local DNR office for more information.
