Andersen Expanding Minnesota Facilities

Andersen Corp. is planning to add more than 300 jobs as part of a $45 million expansion project at its manufacturing facilities in Cottage Grove and North Branch. Andersen will receive $1.5 million from DEED's Job Creation Fund and $500,000 from the Minnesota Investment Fund for the projects. The company received $625,000 from the Job Creation fund for its Bayport expansion last year. 

Job Fair Focuses on Somali Community

Ibrahim Noor doesn't want people to lose hope about finding a job. Noor, who manages two workforce centers for DEED, was among those attending a job fair aimed at the Somali community in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood last week. The event was a big success. Twice as many job seekers showed up this year as last year.  

Job Market Tight in Southern Minnesota

Competition for workers is heating up in southern Minnesota, with the unemployment rate falling to 2.5 percent in Nicollet County, according to figures from DEED. Surrounding counties are reporting similar low jobless rates. Employers are responding by holding job fairs and offering more competitive wages.

Job Vacancies Near 14-Year High
Job vacancies in Minnesota rose to 88,900 in the fourth quarter of 2014, a 47 percent increase from the same period a year earlier and the most since the second quarter of 2001. Minnesota had 1.1 unemployed people for every vacancy in the fourth quarter, compared with 2.1 unemployed people for every vacancy a year earlier.  

Minnesota Cup Accepting Applications
The 11th annual Minnesota Cup — the largest statewide entrepreneurial competition in the United States — is accepting applications for the 2015 contest. Minnesota residents have until May 8 to submit entries to compete for a record $327,000 in prize money. DEED is one of the sponsors of the event, which has attracted more than 9,000 competitors since its inception in 2005
