Angel Tax Credit Update

As of Jan. 21, $6 million in tax credits reserved for investments in businesses owned by women or minorities or in businesses in Greater Minnesota remains. After Oct. 1, any remaining tax credits not allocated will be made available to others. Another $5.5 million in credits remains for investments in other businesses.

State Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.6 Percent
Minnesota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent in December; the U.S. unemployment rate was 5.6 percent. State employers cut 5,200 jobs during the month.

Solar Company tenKsolar to Receive Workforce Training
DEED has awarded Anoka-Ramsey Community College a $230,468 Minnesota Job Skills Partnership grant to train 160 tenKsolar, Inc. employees. The Bloomington-based company designs, manufacturers and markets high-tech photovoltaic solar energy systems sold throughout the U.S. and abroad.

In 2014 DEED received funding under the Women’s Economic Security Act to operate a new program aimed at helping women enter high-wage, high-demand, traditionally male-dominated occupations. DEED also received an appropriation to support programs that help women succeed as entrepreneurs and business owners. Last month DEED awarded $475,000 in grants to eight organizations that will prepare and place women in new career opportunities: Lake Superior College, Central Minnesota Jobs and Training, White Earth Indian Reservation, Workforce Development Inc., Goodwill-Easter Seals of Minnesota, YWCA of St. Paul, Dunwoody College of Technology, and YWCA of Minneapolis.
