Final Funding Secured to Update Duluth Docks

The long-awaited $16M rebuild and expansion of the port of Duluth’s Docks C and D will begin at the end of May. A $990K contamination cleanup grant secured from DEED will be matched by the Port Authority and allow for the $16M project to commence with site cleanup.

Compass Datacenters Gets Boost from Minnesota's Tech Push

Compass Datacenters, a third-party certified data center provider based in Dallas, Texas, is the latest IT company to benefit from a tech infrastructure push by Minnesota. The company is opening its first data center in the Minneapolis area. The expansion was made possible in part by a tax credit from the state.

DEED Unemployment Insurance Program Wins National Award

The U.S. Department of Labor presented DEED with its 2014 Performance Excellence Award for Unemployment Insurance Appeals during the National Association of State Workforce Agencies annual UI directors’ conference.

Minnesota Ranks no. 2 in Business Conditions Index

Minnesota continues to show positive business growth, extending a two-year streak. The state posted a score of 61.4 in December’s Business Conditions Index, a survey of supply managers by Creighton University. The score is up slightly from November’s 58 and better than December 2013’s score of 58.9.

Here's government innovation with a capital I: The city of St. Paul's Right Track youth employment program, one of the Office of Youth Development's competitive grantees, recently received a Bush Foundation-sponsored Minnesota Local Government Innovation Award. Right Track helps diverse St. Paul youth get good jobs through early work experiences and skills development. The program includes providing city-subsidized jobs in the parks, libraries, and nonprofit organizations; matching youth with employer-paid internships and skills training; and offering advanced opportunities in such sectors as technology and emergency medical services. The Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota administers the Minnesota local government innovation awards for cities, counties and schools.
