Two Sites Get $331,000 in Cleanup Grants

The Mankato area received two state grants to help clean up polluted sites. A $232,275 grant will go toward cleaning up soil polluted at the former Brad's Auto Salvage site, on the city's north end. A $98,497 grant will help cover cleanup costs at the new Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota site on Lamm Street.
Volunteer rates in the Twin Cities and Minnesota as a whole
are among the highest in the country, according to the Corporation
for National and Community Service's annual survey. About 35 percent of Minnesotans say they
formally volunteered last year.

DEED Awards $6.5M in Cleanup Funding
DEED awarded $6.5M in grants to clean up or investigate pollution at 17 redevelopment sites. The projects are expected to create 498 jobs and retain another 898 jobs. Sites in Blue Earth County, Brooklyn Center, Duluth, Fridley, Hastings, Mankato, Minneapolis, New Ulm, St. Paul, South St. Paul, Vadnais Heights and White Bear Lake were approved for funding from the agency’s Contamination Cleanup and Investigation Grant Program.

The FastTRAC
Healthcare Pathways Program received a Circle of Excellence Award from Minnesota
Department of Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson for its contributions
to human services clients. Program partners include Metro North Adult Basic Education, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Anoka Technical College, and Anoka County Job Training Center. This collaboration developed an innovative approach of integrating basic skills education and career training specializing in older adult care services. The goal is to assist
educationally unprepared Minnesota Family Investment Program and Diversionary
Work Program recipients in gaining the skills
to succeed in a career pathway and obtain a recognized credential and
college credits. Trainees earn eight college credits and a Nursing Assistant
Credential. And they're not left to fend for themselves. Trainees also receive
intensive career advising, support services, tuition assistance, and
ongoing coaching. That's a rock-solid foundation for success in
postsecondary training -- and a job at the end of training. |
