Construction Training to Help Workforce

Recently the Redwood Area Development Corporation was made aware of hiring challenges with Northstar Systembuilt and Schult Homes in Redwood Falls. Both companies have seen an increased demand for skilled workers, and are having difficulty finding applicants to meet those needs. This group met with Minnesota West Community & Technical College and the SW MN WorkForce Center to discuss the possibility of offering a new training for construction and carpentry skills.

DEED Wins National Recognition for Innovative Job Creation Fund
To leverage private investment and small business activity in any community, access to capital is vital. DEED's pay-for-performance approach will receive the Council of Development Finance Agencies Excellence in Access to Capital Finance Award. The award will be presented at the National Development Finance Summit, Nov 20 in Scottsdale, AZ.

At work in his shop and gallery in Minneapolis, George Wurtzel is one of many blind and visually impaired Minnesotans contributing to the state’s vibrant economy. 'I’ve always been handy, and I simply learned how to do everything from plumbing to fixing cars to carpentry using techniques I developed for myself,' Wurtzel said. Sometimes people have a limited idea of the types and variety of jobs that blind, visually impaired and DeafBlind individuals hold, according to Jon Benson, Deputy Director of Program Services, SSB. 'Last year, however, customers served through our Workforce Development unit found work in fields as diverse as nonprofit development management, accounting, and medical technology,' he said.
