DEED representatives conducted a session on economic competitiveness in Bemidji, seeking input from business, education and support agencies. Jorge Prince, CFO for Bemidji's LaValley Industries, pointed to the company as an example of successful entrepreneurship. LaValley Industries employed five people in 2010. It has grown to 35 employees today.

Side hustles can grow into full-time businesses, or just net a little extra money for extras or essentials. Numbers from the Census Bureau suggest side hustles might be on the rise in Minn.

DEED Awards 16 Grants to Train Lower-Income, Current Workers
Twelve Low Income Worker Training Program grants and four MJSP grants will train over 1,700 workers throughout the state.

 The Dislocated Worker Program awarded three grants this month to serve dislocated workers affected by large layoffs. Central MN Job & Training Services was awarded $180,000 to serve 45 former employees of DPMS. HIRED will serve 150 former employees of MoneyGram with their $600,000 grant. Stearns-Benton Employment & Training Council received a $604,500 grant to serve 150 former employees of Quad Graphics.
