THE DIRECTOR’S CORNER
Happy New Year! As we have discussed in this newsletter and in many face-to-face trainings this past autumn, we are now facing TAA’s “2014 Reversion”, as dubbed by the U.S. Department of Labor. This unfortunate development is a result of Congress not acting to renew the 2011 law, which expired December 31, 2013. Until and unless Congress takes new action, current “2014 Reversion” law (really 2002 law) will remain in effect for the foreseeable future. This is a less generous law, particularly in regards to sites that can be certified by the U.S. Department of Labor. Details are in this issue.
Our agency is in contact with the Governor’s Office, Congressional delegations, U.S. Department of Labor, and other key stakeholders regarding the reversion and its potential and realized impact on laid off Minnesotans. We will continue to update partners as we learn more. Thank you in the meantime for your patience and thoughtful approach to the lives and careers of our shared customers!

TAA RECIPIENTS RECEIVING FEDERAL EXTENSIONS
Last week UI Projects identified a list of about 130 applicants
whose Federal extension would end 12/28/13. Those applicants eligible for TRA
will see a link on their UI account which allows them to request TRA benefits.
If they do not see the link to request benefits, they should e-mail deed.tra@state.mn.us or
call UI Customer Service at 651-296-3644 or 1-877-898-9090.
TRANSPORTATION SUBSISTANCE WHILE IN TRAINING
The TAA transportation subsistence process has changed. TAA
clients approved for transportation subsistence while in training will be paid
through the SWIFT system. For any TAA training plans that include
transportation subsistence, TAA is asking Dislocated Worker Counselors to
please advise the client to register as a vendor in SWIFT. Feel free to contact
the TAA unit with questions or concerns.
RE: TAA TRAINING THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE
Dislocated
Worker Counselors, do you have TAA eligible clients that submitted training
plans that were approved and never attended school? This could have happened
because they found employment, contracted an illness or some other life event.
If so, please contact TAA so that we can have WF1 delete those occupational
skills training activities. If you have additional compelling information that
could assist the client at a future date, please include that along with the
client’s name and WF1 ID. This will allow both you and TAA to have cleaner
statistics regarding placement and captured credentials, and delete that which
would be viewed as a negative.
We strive for the information in this newsletter to be relevant and
useful, and we encourage you to provide feedback and suggestions for future TAA
Topics or TAA Success Stories. To contact the TAA team regarding this
newsletter, please e-mail: cynthia.boyle@state.mn.us and type “TAA
Newsletter” in the subject line.
