New DEED Office Aims for Inclusivity

DEED's new Office of Career and Business Opportunity will connect disadvantaged groups across Minnesota with employment and business opportunities. The office will have three staff members: an assistant commissioner, a director and a programs manager. Commissioner Sieben sat down with MinnPost's Ibrahim Hirsi recently to talk about the office and its goals.

Jobs Aplenty in Construction Sector

The recession hit the construction sector hard, but the industry is making a comeback and companies are looking for workers again. More than 35 construction companies participated in a job fair at the Mall of America last week. DEED's Oriane Casale says a tighter labor market is making it difficult for builders to fill openings. Employment in the sector is at a seven-year high in the state.

The Communication Center at State Services for the Blind had a busy and productive 2015. The facility provided 1,019,870 pages of braille to customers, transcribed 1,335,328 pages of print into audio, and maintained and distributed 22,709 pieces of equipment. Communication Center services help people stay informed, in-touch with their communities, entertained, and on target to meet education and employment goals.
