WorkForce Center Project Under Way

Leaders from many levels of government, including Gov. Mark Dayton, gathered along the North Side’s core commercial strip to commemorate the long-awaited redevelopment of a vacant building at Aldrich and West Broadway avenues. The new center, a collaboration of several public entities, including DEED, will offer job assistance, educational opportunities and medical services.

MVTV Awarded DEED Broadband Grant

A DEED grant of just over $800,000 will help spark the next major investment by local, nonprofit television and Internet provider MVTV Wireless. “It is a game changing investment,” said MVTV Wireless President Dan Richter. “It will allow us to improve access and offer higher speed Internet packages that will enhance services for more than 3,000 farm-related businesses and 6,000 rural residents across nearly 30,000 square miles."

DEED's Steve Hine was among the speakers at the SE Minnesota Together roundtable in Winona last Thursday. He discussed current economic trends and challenges in the job market. The Winona event was the third in a series in the 11-county southeastern Minnesota region.

800 West Broadway

Groundbreaking for 800 West Broadway
Gov. Mark Dayton and other officials broke ground last Tuesday on 800 West Broadway, a new employment, education and healthy living center in north Minneapolis. The facility will contain several services under one roof, including the North Minneapolis WorkForce Center, NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, Minneapolis Public Schools and retail space. The $8 million project is expected to be completed next fall.

DEED Creates Asst. Commissioner Post
DEED is seeking applicants for the newly-created position of assistant commissioner of career and business opportunity. The new Office of Career and Business Opportunity was created by Gov. Dayton to help workers and businesses of color find career paths and business opportunities in Minnesota. The office will identify and help break down barriers to employment and business opportunities for communities of color across Minnesota.

Abdallah Plans Apple Valley Expansion
Abdallah Candies, a fourth-generation, family-owned gourmet candy maker in Burnsville, announced plans last week for a $12.2 million expansion in Apple Valley. The business, which began in 1909 in south Minneapolis, plans to build a 70,000-square-foot candy-manufacturing facility in Phase 1 of its expansion and another 50,000 to 70,000 square feet later. Abdallah will add 17 new jobs. DEED is assisting the expansion with a $170,000 grant from the Job Creation Fund.
