New Workforce Housing Program

DEED is accepting applications for grants awarded by the Workforce Housing Development Program. The program provides matching funds that communities can use to encourage developers to build market-rate rental housing.

About 16 percent of the power generated in Minnesota comes from wind. That compares with about 9 percent in 2010 and 3 percent in 2005, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce. The state ranks eighth nationally in wind-power capacity.

Angel Tax Credits Distributed for 2015
The Minnesota Angel Tax Credit Program has fully distributed all $16 million in tax credits that were available to angel fund investors in 2015. A total of 115 businesses received investments, including 13 that were minority-owned, 10 that were women-owned and 13 that were based in Greater Minnesota. The program is now accepting applications for $15 million in tax credits that will be available next year.

State Exports at $5 Billion in Third Quarter
Minnesota exporters sold $5 billion worth of agricultural, mining and manufactured products in the third quarter, a decline of 10 percent from the same period a year ago, according to figures released last week by DEED. Exports fell in 42 states during the third quarter, with overall U.S. exports down 8 percent from a year ago. In the calendar year, both U.S. and Minnesota exports have declined 6 percent.

DEED is funding a new initiative designed to promote minority-owned business growth in southern Minnesota. The Prosperity Initiative will provide education and business support to minority business owners and will educate resource partners about barriers and opportunities faced by those businesses. The first phase of the program includes a survey of existing minority businesses. The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation will lead the program.
