Smith Promotes Angel Tax Credits

Lt. Gov. Tina Smith visited the ProMed medical device company in Plymouth last week to make a pitch for the Angel Tax Credit Program. Minnesota's technology industry is among the fastest growing in the nation, and state officials attribute some of that success to the angel investment tax credit. "[The tax credit] creates an incentive for investments in startup Minnesota companies. It's very unusual in the country," Smith said.

Oil and the Minnesota Economy

While the North Dakota oil patch has little impact on the Minnesota economy, some businesses in the Gopher State have benefitted. Two examples are St. Cloud-based grocery store owner Coborn's Inc. and Bemidji equipment maker LaValley Industries. Another Minnesota business, the Shingobee Builders construction firm, has done well enough to open a small office in Williston.

DEED-DNR Joint Program Recognized

The Minnesota Rehabilitation Association recently recognized a successful partnership between the DNR and DEED to boost employment opportunities for people with disabilities. In January, the two agencies signed a memorandum of understanding that guarantees DNR job interviews to qualified applicants who are referred by DEED Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

New Funding Round for Angel Tax Credits
The Minnesota Angel Tax Credit Program, which has attracted more than $300 million for hundreds of high-tech startups in Minnesota since 2010, is accepting certification applications for 2016. Of the $15 million in new credits available in 2016, half is reserved for investments in businesses owned by women or members of minority groups or businesses based in Greater Minnesota.

DEED Awards Job-Training Funding
Northland Community and Technical College will receive more than $293,000 from DEED's Minnesota Job Skills Partnership to train 75 employees of Titan Machinery. Workers will study farm operations/precision agriculture, equipment operation, welding, geology, hydraulic systems, ag-related electrical/electronic systems, microcomputer maintenance, and soil maintenance and fertility. The training will be offered over the next three years.

Through the newly launched Aging Eyes Initiative, State Services for the Blind  is partnering with Minnesotans who work with seniors to provide services for those in the early stages of vision loss. Community partners will receive training and resources to help seniors adapt to changing vision.
