Good Year for Venture Capital, Mergers

Venture capitalists, cool to Minnesota companies during the first three quarters of the year, have started to open their wallets. Six companies in the state raised nearly $65 million in the third quarter ended Sept. 30. That’s the highest quarterly amount so far this year, but less than during the same period in 2014.

Help Wanted: Over-the-Road Truckers

It's been a rough road for Minnesota trucking companies, which are struggling to fill positions because of a driver shortage. DEED's Steve Hine says trucking firms aren't alone. With baby boomers transitioning into retirement, Minnesota will have a difficult time maintaining the size of its workforce in coming years.  "The bottom line is that for the next 15 years we're going to see very slow growth, if any growth at all, in the number of workers we have available," he says.

Group Honors DEED-DNR Partnership
A new program that boosts employment opportunities in state government for people with disabilities was recognized by the Minnesota Rehabilitation Association. The program a partnership between DEED and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) guarantees DNR job interviews to qualified applicants who are referred by DEED's Vocational Rehabilitation Services. “This program is an important step that will help increase active recruiting and hiring of people with disabilities,” Commissioner Sieben said.

Minnesota MedTech Week
Minnesota’s medical technology industry is among the biggest in the country, with more than 35,000 jobs tied to the sector. Lt. Gov. Tina Smith will highlight the importance of the industry during Minnesota MedTech Week activities this week. She will participate in an angel investment tax credit roundtable, tour several growing businesses and provide opening remarks at the Minnesota MedTech Week Conference.
