Manufacturers who worry about where they are going to find the next generation of skilled employees, might well look to Fergus Falls and White Bear Lake for an idea. The two school districts this fall unveiled ambitious high school programs designed to help students think about careers in manufacturing.

Tina Smith and Kathleen Motzenbecker of the Minnesota Trade Office attended the Lakes Area Manufacturing Breakfast in Merrifield last week to stress the importance of manufacturing in Minnesota. They discussed manufacturing exports and grants that are available to help manufacturing companies take the first step to entering global markets.

Minnesota was second in the country with 8,147 medical patents granted from 2009 to 2014, according to LifeScience Alley. California was first with 13,030 patents granted. On a per capita basis, Minnesota entities or inventors were granted at least twice as many patents on average as Massachusetts, the next closest state.

The proclamation recognizes the unique contributions and significance of Minnesota's "Medical Alley" region, an area globally renowned for innovation in medical technology and health care delivery. More than 35,000 people work at Minnesota medical technology companies.
