Help Wanted in the Food Service Industry

A large percentage of Minnesota's 98,000 job vacancies in the second quarter were in the food service industry. DEED's Steve Hine said a stronger economy combined with a lack of teenage workers has led to a worker shortage in bars and restaurants. "Teenagers are out of necessity being more involved in school-related activities during the summer rather than just simply having the summer off and taking it as an opportunity to take a job," he said.

Wadena Firm Awarded DEED Funding

Stars Hollow was approved for $677,605 from DEED's Job Creation Fund to develop an aquaponics operation in Wadena. The business expects to create 98 jobs, with a total company investment of $3.42 million.

Trade Office Awarded STEP Funding
The Minnesota Trade Office has been awarded $564,132 from the U.S. Small Business Administration to fund the Minnesota STEP Program. Grants will be available for first-time exporters or current exporters that are interested in expanding into new international markets. Qualifying companies can use the funding to participate in foreign trade missions, trade shows and other export-related activities. 

State Commissioners Hit the Road
The “Commissioners on Wheels” tour last week featured leaders of nine state agencies visiting seven communities in northern Minnesota and talking directly with business owners about how to make doing business in Minnesota easier. Tour stops included Warroad, International Falls, Bemidji, Bena, Cohasset, Carlton and Duluth.  Commissioner Sieben was the tour leader.

DEED held an open house last Thursday that attracted about 30 people who were interested in learning about programs and services that the agency offers to business startups and entrepreneurs. Experts from Business and Community Development were on hand to offer advice and other assistance. The event was among the activities during Twin Cities Startup Week, which ran through Sunday.
