Student Joining Mexican Trade Trip

University of St. Thomas junior Anna Nolan will join Gov. Dayton and other leaders on a trade mission to Mexico next month aimed at promoting economic ties with our nation’s southern neighbor. As the sole college student invited to be part of the delegation, Nolan, an economics major, will represent Minnesota, St. Thomas, college students and herself on what she described as “such a cool opportunity.”

Daikin Completes Owatonna Project

Daikin Applied, the world's largest air conditioning manufacturer, has completed construction of its $9 million expansion project in Owatonna. The company has hired 50 employees and is looking to add 20 to 30 more, exceeding the number of new hires that it originally anticipated making. DEED awarded the project $880,000 from its Job Creation Fund last year.

Dayton Declares Hire a Veteran Month

Gov. Dayton has declared July to be "Hire a Veteran Month" in Minnesota. Among activities this month, veterans are encouraged to participate in the state's largest Veterans Career Fair on Wednesday at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center. The event is sponsored by DEED and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

DEED Awards Cleanup Funding
Redevelopment projects that will create or retain 464 jobs have been approved for cleanup funding from DEED. The agency awarded $3.57 million from its Contamination Cleanup and Investigation Grant Program for 13 projects in the state. The funding will help pay for cleaning up or investigating pollution on those sites. Housing, office and retail space, hotels and schools are among the projects planned.

Grants Approved for Workforce Training
DEED awarded grants totaling $2.1 million to help workers at Minnesota businesses upgrade their job skills. The funding was awarded through DEED's Minnesota Job Skills Partnership. Nearly 2,200 workers will receive training at state community and technical colleges.
