Medical Device Companies Honored

Two companies that established global headquarters for their medical divisions in Minnesota were the first recipients of a new governor’s award recognizing direct local investments by international manufacturers in the state. Smiths Medical in Arden Hills and Heraeus Medical Components in White Bear Township received two of the four Governor’s Foreign Direct Investment Awards at a ceremony last week.

Southwest Touts Career Opportunities

DEED business service specialist Julie Redepenning says interest in labor market conditions is growing in southwestern Minnesota. She says local businesses are focused on recruiting and retaining workers, well aware of the competitive market for skilled labor. Job opportunities are strong both for graduates with high school degrees and those with post-secondary degrees.  

Summer Job Market Heats Up for Teens

Cookie Cart, a nonprofit bakery in north Minneapolis, is among the businesses hiring teens this summer, as the job market improves for young people. Cookie Cart, which employs 55 teenagers, is the largest year-round provider of youth employment training in the Twin Cities. DEED's Oriane Casale says the teen unemployment rate fell to 11.4 percent in Minnesota last summer and probably will drop even further this summer as businesses look to fill openings.

Three of the top five small cities in America are in Minnesota, according to a NerdWallet study. Moorhead is No. 1, Winona is No. 2 and Mankato is No. 5. NerdWallet based its rankings on the economic health, quality of life and affordability of 1,300 U.S. cities with fewer than 75,000 residents.

Dubow Textile Expanding in St. Cloud
Dubow Textile Inc. is expanding its workforce by 20 employees and building a 21,000-square-foot addition at its operations in St. Cloud. The company is investing $1.5 million to expand and modify its current facility at 455 Lincoln Ave. NE. DEED approved the company for a grant of $176,575 from the Job Creation Fund.

DEED Unveils Career Profile Tool
Career Profile, a new data tool that helps students and job seekers learn about wages, educational requirements, job opening projections and other details related to hundreds of occupations, was unveiled last week by DEED. The free tool, available here on the DEED website, combines data from DEED’s Labor Market Information Office, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other federal and state agencies. 

Companies Win Export and FDI Awards
Five Minnesota companies received 2014 Governor’s International Trade Awards last week, while four other businesses were presented with the first-ever Governor’s Foreign Direct Investment Awards. Two other businesses were honored for helping Minnesota companies navigate the complex regulatory and trade compliance requirements of international markets.

DEED's annual Minnesota Veterans Career Fair is a much-anticipated event that draws hundreds of participants who want to connect with employers and educational institutions.
