Without Internet service, Ramstad says, small-town businesses can't compete in a global economy. She speaks from experience. She and her husband considered moving their business, Weave Got Maille, to North Dakota until fiber was installed locally.

Olympus Opens Brooklyn Park Facility

Olympus Surgical Technologies America opened its new $37 million Surgical Innovation Center in Brooklyn Park last month. Olympus officials said they chose the site because of Minnesota's central location in the United States, strong medical device industry and talented workforce. DEED provided an incentive for the facility, approving the company for a $1 million forgivable loan from its Minnesota Investment Fund.

Minnesota is a major player in the neuromodulation medical device market, accounting for 91 percent of annual global sales of $3 billion, according to a new report by LifeScience Alley. Neuromodulation technology enhances or suppresses activity of the nervous system for the treatment of diseases like Parkinson's.

DEED Loans Help Small Businesses Expand
Small businesses in Minnesota have received $7.8 million in loans that helped them create or retain 2,600 jobs under a program launched by DEED in late 2011.
Since beginning the federally funded State Small Business Credit Initiative, DEED has completed 169 loans for small businesses throughout the state. Businesses participating in those loans have leveraged more than $130 million in private sector equity and financing – a return on investment of more than 16 to 1.

Chaska Wind-Power Developer Signs Deal
SheerWind Inc., a Chaska-based developer of wind-power systems, has signed a licensing agreement that will allow its technology to be marketed and deployed in Denmark. The agreement will enable wind-power developer E-Venturi to introduce SheerWind’s INVELOX wind delivery system to potential customers in Denmark. The first pilot project is expected to be built in Denmark before the end of the year.
