Teens Finally Catching a Hiring Break

With the labor market tightening, DEED's Oriane Casale says teens are going to be a hotter commodity this summer than in the recent past. One newly hired teen is Aissatou Royce-Diop, a 14-year-old who started her first job last week at a Dairy Queen in south Minneapolis.

St. Cloud Event Touts Construction Jobs

Nearly 500 high school students learned about careers in construction during an event in St. Cloud last week. With baby boomers retiring, the industry expects to have many openings in coming years. "We need to find the next generation of workers," said Mary DesJarlais of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.

Karla Albertz’s journey to employment began in high school when she was referred to James Langevin of DEED's Vocational Rehabilitation Services unit. Langevin, who works with disabled students in Goodhue and Wabasha counties, said Albertz blossomed, thanks to her can-do attitude. She achieved her employment dream when she was hired by the local Target store in February.

Job Opportunities Improving for Teens
Job prospects for Minnesota teenagers have improved considerably since the recession, with the average unemployment rate for young people ages 16 to 19 falling to 11.4 percent in 2014, according to figures from DEED. The new figures are an improvement from teen jobless rates that surged to more than 20 percent during the recession.

DEED Awards Training Grant for Lueken's
Forty-three workers at Lueken’s Village Foods in Bemidji will receive training in aquaponics and sustainability under a $49,572 grant awarded by DEED's Minnesota Job Skills Partnership. Lueken’s, an employee-owned business that has two grocery stores, a restaurant and a web development company, is expanding into aquaponics farming, which involves growing fish and plants in the same system.
