    Calling All Artists & Poets!

    The Planning Committee for the Annual Statewide Conference on Justice Involved Women is inviting artistic creations or poetry to be included in the upcoming conference April 18th, 2016.

    We are accepting poetry or artwork of all types from girls who’s lives have been touched by the criminal justice system. Submit no more than one work in each category (visual & written).

    Submissions will be honored and displayed at the conference. The committee will select three submissions from each category (visual & written) to receive a $50 honorarium.

    Please include your name, address, phone number (or staff at your facility we can contact as your representative) so that we may return your items and/or send the honorarium. Finalists for the honorarium will be selected based on the following criteria: relevance to the theme, intensity of the message, and originality.

    MnSCU Two-Year Occupational Grant Pilot Program

    Purpose: The program provides financial assistance to students enrolled in qualifying career and technical programs at MnSCU two-year colleges so that students can complete the program within two years or less and find employment in a high-demand occupation. It was created by the 2015 Minnesota Legislature and will be implemented for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years as a pilot program.

    Applying: To apply for the initial grant for the 2016-2017 academic year, students must complete the 2016-2017 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available in January 2016. Undocumented students should apply using the 2016-2017 MN Dream Act state financial aid application. Due to limited funding, students are advised to apply as early as possible, since applicants will be ranked by application date.

    The National Institute of Corrections has updated the Offender Employment Specialist OES curriculum. Hennepin County DOCCR is pleased to offer the new updated RES training in 2016. This 16-hour training is designed for practitioners who assist individuals with a criminal history to prepare for employment and ultimately job retention.

    Topics to be covered include:The Reentry Employment Model, Reentry Roles and Collaboration, Assessing for strengths and needs, Barriers and Interventions, Pre-Employment and Job Readiness, Effective Job Search Techniques, Employer Engagement, and Job Retention Strategies.

    The Minnesota Commanders' Task Force, the United Veterans Legislative Council, and the Minnesota Association of County Veterans Service Officers will be holding this year's Veterans Day on the Hill at the Cedar Street Armory on Wednesday, March 16, at 10 a.m.

    This is a free event, and all Veterans are welcome to attend.


    Minnesota Woman Veteran of the Year

    The Women Veterans Initiative is proud to honor one extraordinary female Veteran annually during a spring Women Veterans event. The Minnesota Woman Veteran of the Year award will recognize a female Veteran who has served honorably and is a community leader. This award is part of the women Veterans Initiative’s continuing effort to honor women Veterans.

    One woman Veteran will be recognized as the Minnesota Woman Veteran of the Year. Nominations will be accepted from the public.

    A Minnesota Woman Veteran of the Year is someone who: Honorably served in the United States military, Displays leadership and supports women Veteran issues, Is a serving citizen in her Minnesota community.

    Nomination forms must include the nominee’s general information along with a brief narrative explaining why the Veteran is being nominated for the award. Nominations not selected may be retained for future award consideration. 

    Nominations may be submitted by any Minnesota resident. Submissions from Minnesota Veterans, Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs), County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs), and other Veteran groups are encouraged.

    Crow Wing County Jail Transition Fair

    The Crow Wing County Jail cordially invites representatives from your organization to attend the 5th Annual Transitions Fair on Thursday April 7, 2016 from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

    Minnesota Correctional Facility- Shakopee Transition Fair

    Date: Tuesday April 12, 2016

    Background Check/Registration Information due by: March 24, 2016

    Time: 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM

    The Transition Fair will be organized in this manner: a new group of offenders will attend every half-hour. They will have the opportunity to utilize an hour, if needed. Lunch will be provided to all representatives between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. with the Transition Fair resuming at 12:00 p.m. Due to security purposes, you will be unable to leave the facility during lunch.

    We will provide a table and chairs for exhibitors. We will also have a table sign stating your organization name and a brief description of the services you provide. Should you need any outlets or AV equipment, please let us know and this will be provided for your display. Please know that if you want to bring in any AV equipment; DVD, etc., arrangements must be made prior to the fair date. The location of the fair is cool; please dress in layers for your comfort. In addition, if supplied with your organization’s name, purpose, and contact person, we will prepare a flyer to supplement the handouts you may distribute at the Transition Fair.

    Job Opening with The Council on Crime and Justice (CCJ)- Healthy Relationships Educator

    This posting is for a contractor to work about 30 hours per week with the Council on Crime and Justice (CCJ) on our brand new healthy relationship program for women incarcerated at MCF-Shakopee.  This position is responsible for helping to launch and implement a new and unique program in the Shakopee women’s prison that will promote zero-tolerance and cultural change related to sexual victimization.  This will be accomplished by creating informational saturation messages throughout the facility, conducting educational and support groups for female prisoners focused on healthy relationships between prisoners during incarceration, and creating educational materials and conducting training and for staff.

    Hours: Part-Time, Independent Contractor, approximately 30 hours per week.  Flexibility required.  This grant-funded position is anticipated to end September 2016. 

    Qualifications: BS/BA Degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Human Services or related field, or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge, Experience working with an incarcerated population, Experience working with victims of crime, preferred experience with sexual assault/violence victims, Knowledge regarding healthy relationship education, PREA, sexual violence, violence prevention and response strategies, Comfort and ability with public speaking, leading groups, and educating diverse populations, Strong written and verbal communication skills, Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including ability to create marketing and educational materials, Ability to remain calm and respond in a professional manner during high pressure situations, Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality in all aspects of position, Skilled in multi-cultural outreach and able to communicate effectively and work with diverse backgrounds.

    Hennepin County: Request for Qualifications

    The RFQ seeks submissions from qualified individual therapists who are committed to working with correctional and HSPHD social service supervised youth and their families. Proposers must meet the required criteria detailed in the RFQ document.  Hennepin County wants to have the capacity to meet the cultural needs of the youth and families within the target population for sex offender services.

    AVAILABLE FUNDING: CAPACITY BUILDING INITITATIVE

    Funding is now available under the Capacity Building Initiative, a resource to help communities across Minnesota where a lack of organizational capacity creates the risk that geographic areas and constituencies will be underserved. We want organizations in every corner of the state to successfully compete for funding for development activities and housing related services. We have allocated $300,000 for this initiative. 

    We are accepting proposal for projects that help fill in gaps in our statewide network of developers and service providers. Successful applications must demonstrate a long-term strategy to sustain developed capacity. Learn more about eligibility requirements and review criteria, and consider sharing this opportunity with your networks.

    Who can apply: Tax exempt nonprofits, Local units of government and political subdivisions, and Tribal governments and tribal corporate entities.

    If you are interested in applying for Capacity Building funding, please complete a short Letter of Inquiry form. If you would like your Letter of Inquiry to be considered for the initial round of funding please submit by February 29, 2016

    Department of Justice- Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP): 2016 Second Chance Act Strengthening Relationships Between Young Fathers, Young Mothers, and Their Children Grant

    The 2016 Second Chance Act Strengthening Relationships Between Young Fathers, Young Mothers, and Their Children initiative will provide funding to support the successful transition for young fathers and mothers as they return to their families and communities from detention, out-of-home placement or incarceration. This program will fund coordinated and comprehensive strategies that incorporate (1) mentoring and transitional reentry services proven to reduce recidivism; (2) effective parenting skills development and parent/child relationship engagement for young fathers or mothers; and (3) private and community service partnerships that promote public safety and support added positive outcomes for young parents and their children. This solicitation has the following two categories: Category 1: Young Fathers and Their Children; and Category 2: Young Mothers and Their Children.

    Implementing Statewide Plans to Improve Outcomes for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

    The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is accepting applications from states interested in effectively implementing a comprehensive, statewide plan to reduce recidivism and improve other outcomes for youth involved in the juvenile justice system.

    The grant is intended to help states implement plans to improve outcomes for youth under juvenile justice system supervision that: Establish baseline recidivism rates and provide targets for improvement; Align system policies and practices with the research on “what works” to reduce recidivism; and Demonstrate the support of the governor, legislative and judicial leaders, and representatives of local government, and positions them to assess implementation of the plan and track progress over time.  

    States that have developed such plans are eligible to apply, and OJJDP estimates that three states will receive awards up to $1 million each for a 24-month project period.

    Applications are due by March 8, 2016.

    Department of Justice (DOJ)- Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA)-Second Chance Act Comprehensive Community-Based Adult Reentry Program Utilizing Mentors

    The Community-Based Reentry Program Utilizing Mentors will provide $1, 000, 0000 awards for a three year grant period to private non-profits to provide comprehensive, community-based reentry services to formerly incarcerated individuals with moderate to high risk of recidivating. These reentry programs will include a mentoring component.

    Office of Minority Health (OMH)- Communities Addressing Childhood Trauma (ACT)

    The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (OMH) administers grant programs to support projects that implement innovative models to improve minority health and reduce health disparities. OMH has released a new funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for which applications are now being accepted.

    Estimated Funding Level: $3 million per budget period

    OMH announces the availability of funds for Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 for grant awards for the Communities Addressing Childhood Trauma (ACT) Program. ACT is intended to test the effectiveness of innovative approaches in promoting healthy behaviors among minority and/or disadvantaged youth at-risk for poor health/life outcomes due to childhood trauma.
