Since 2009, more than 600 Second Chance Act grant awards have been made to government agencies and nonprofit organizations from 49 states for reentry programs serving adults and juveniles. Please support the Second Chance Reauthorization Act by contacting your members of congress. Here are some reasons why you should take action.

The Second Chance Reauthorization Act promotes successful reentry and improves public safety.

  • It funds state and local programs that have been proven to reduce recidivism, lead to better outcomes for those released from prison, and save prison costs.
  • It promotes family-based substance abuse treatment and career training.
  • It continues the Elderly and Family Reunification for Certain Non-Violent Offenders Pilot Program expands the pool of eligible inmates.
  • It improves accountability by requiring periodic audits of grantees.

According to The Council of State Governments Justice Center (CSG), Programs that are effective at reducing recidivism have three core elements in common: they target people who are most likely to reoffend (who); they use practices rooted in the latest research on what works to reduce recidivism (what), and they regularly review program quality and evaluate how closely the program adheres to its established model (how well).

Call for Applicants to the Small Business Administration’s Microloan Program

SBA

The U.S. Small Business Administration has announced that it is expanding eligibility to its Microloan program to include business owners who are currently on probation or parole. The goal of this expansion is to aid individuals with the highest barriers to traditional employment in reentering the workforce.

The program provides loans of up to $50,000 to help small businesses and certain not-for-profit child-care centers start up and expand. Microloans play an important role in distressed communities, where conventional lending opportunities are not always available.

This action supports the goals of the Federal Interagency Reentry Council to reduce barriers to employment and lessen recidivism. It also implements key recommendations of the president’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative to increase access to jobs, reduce violence, and provide a second chance.
