Art Benches from Shakopee Correctional Facility Need a Home!
The Minnesota Correctional
Facility-Shakopee, along with the Minnesota State Arts Board have decided to
decommission 6 art benches currently on the campus of MCF-Shakopee. These
benches were originally constructed in 1994 and incorporate not only the work
of professional Minnesota artists, but designs incorporated from the offender
population, as well. The facility, due to planned construction, is in
need of removing them. Rather than destroy the benches, we are hoping
a few of our community partners would be interested in taking them for use on
their campuses. The original artists have indicated an interest in one of
the benches, leaving 5 available for any interested party.

NIC’s Offender Workforce Development Specialist Training (OWDS) 2015 sponsored by Hennepin County DOCCR
Hennepin County DOCCR is pleased to announce the
offering of The National Institute of Corrections 160 hour curriculum -
Offender Workforce Development Specialist (OWDS). The course will be offered at
the Hennepin County Home School in Minnetonka, MN on September 21 – 25 and
November 16 – 20.The course includes
e-learnings and practicum assignments in addition to the classroom work.
The objectives of the OWDS
Training Program are to:
1.
Provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to deliver
effective workforce development services.
2.
Promote collaborations that will result in increased positive offender
employment outcomes.
3. Help participants develop a plan for delivering practitioner or
client training in their
communities.
The Offender Workforce Development Specialist
(OWDS) Training Program provides participants with the skills needed to assist
offenders with career planning, job placement, job retention, and career
advancement. The program also works to establish partnerships where none may
have existed before, thereby helping to create a seamless continuum of
workforce development services at pretrial status or from the correctional
system to the community. The training program satisfies the training
requirements for Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) certification.
The OWDS training requires a commitment of approximately 4 weeks over a period
of approximately 3 months. Classroom instruction consists of two 40-hour
sessions. The e-courses and field work require an additional 80 hours.
The classroom training sessions are scheduled approximately 8
weeks apart to minimize the disruption to participants’ critical job responsibilities.
During these intervals between classroom sessions, participants are required
to complete e-courses along with field work and reading assignments. Therefore,
a prospective trainee and his or her supervisor should discuss how best to
balance workload requirements with the OWDS training requirements.
The applicant pool for this training should include but is not
limited to; correctional institution staff, probation/parole staff, community
service providers, workforce center staff, faith-based program staff and other
practitioners who provide services to offenders or training to practitioners to
enhance employment outcomes.Applicants
will be screened for ability to meet GCDF certification requirements.Agencies will be limited in the number of participants
that will be accepted into the training, based upon demand.
The Application process is now open and is expected to close on July
17th, 2015. Send all inquiries to: dennis.gilbertson@hennepin.us/ 612-596-0113
