Secretary Johnson, partners highlight critical need for organ donors

Calling it a pioneer in encouraging organ, tissue and eye donation, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson awarded Oakwood Hospital a Shining Star Award this month at an event to celebrate Donate Life Month alongside Gift of Life Michigan and Eversight Michigan.

“Oakwood Hospital has made organ donation part of its mission,” said Johnson, standing in front of the hospital’s “A New Dawn” display featuring glass doves in lighted glass panels to honor organ and tissue donors. “Since 2010, staff has added nearly 1,200 names to the registry and Oakwood continues to be a leading donor hospital.”

Gift of Life Michigan and Eversight Michigan (formerly the Michigan Eye-Bank) nominated the hospital for the Shining Star Award for its culture of donation and its commitment to adding names to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. Also in 2014, the hospital unveiled a memorial titled “A New Dawn” near the interfaith sanctuary, thanking and remembering donors who help others live.

Earlier this year, the number of eligible Michigan residents on the registry surpassed 50 percent. About 85 percent of people who sign up do so through the Secretary of State’s Office.

You can join the donor registry at www.Michigan.gov/organdonation.

Be prepared for potholes

It is pothole season in Michigan and drivers should be aware of how they form and what can be done to minimize the danger they present to motorists.

pothole

The Michigan Department of Transportation website has good resources, including a diagram of The Birth of a Pothole, tips for dealing with potholes, and a pothole reporting system so the traffic hazards can be repaired.

It is best to avoid hitting potholes so driving cautiously with proper following distance is important to have time to react when you encounter one on the roadway.

Detroit pastor earns Shining Star award

Secretary Johnson awarded the Rev. Patrick Gahagen, former pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Detroit, with a Shining Star Award on March 27 for his support of organ, tissue and eye donation.

“After receiving a double lung transplant in 1997 due to cystic fibrosis, the Rev. Gahagen has been instrumental in spreading the word about organ, tissue and eye donation,” Johnson said.
