A 64-year-old Eastpointe man was sentenced to one year in jail for selling fake insurance certificates, Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd announced on Feb. 26.
Hakeem Olayinka Sanusi pleaded no contest to six felony counts of insurance fraud as a habitual offender. Sanusi was sentenced by 56th Circuit Judge Jeffrey Sauter after pleading no contest Jan. 9 to one count of conducting a criminal enterprise, two counts of uttering and publishing, two counts of sale of counterfeit insurance certificates and one count of identity theft.
“This case is an example of what we can achieve when agencies work together to protect customers from scammers,” Johnson said. “Together, we can make sure that thieves don’t take advantage of unsuspecting people – and that when we catch them, we pursue prosecution.”
