"Online, no-wait Secretary of State" is improving customer convenience

ExpressSOS.com, the Michigan Secretary of State's online site that provides 24/7 access to the most frequently used customer services, recently marked its five millionth successful transaction.

"The people of Michigan are the real winners here," said Secretary of State Ruth Johnson. "On the day ExpressSOS.com went live, we tripled our online offerings. Since that time, millions of people have accessed our most popular services without having to drive to their local branch office, park their car and wait in line. And it's shortened the lines for people who want or need to visit us in person."

Johnson credited cooperation between dedicated Secretary of State staff members, Gov. Rick Snyder and his IT leaders with getting the longtime project launched in October 2011.

Using ExpressSOS.com, most customers can:

  • Change their address
  • Obtain a duplicate vehicle registration
  • Renew license plates/tabs
  • Renew or replace a standard driver's license
  • Renew or replace a state ID
  • Renew watercraft registrations
  • Order a replacement title

SOS gets an updated home page

After months of planning, the Secretary of State’s office unveiled a dynamic updated home page on June 7.

For the first time ever, the modernized site features timely news headlines on a digital billboard that rotates every few seconds and links seamlessly to additional information. Also new to the home page is a live feed of trending social media stories from the Secretary of State Twitter account – another first!

While it's a whole new look and feel, the refreshed site still offers the same familiar "buttons" SOS customers have come to know.

Donor numbers soar

Forty-seven percent of Michigan adults are now on the state's organ donor registry – up 20 percentage points from 2011, when Secretary of State Johnson changed policy to direct SOS employees to ask each customer, as time permits, if they would like to join the registry.

Efforts by staff to give customers the opportunity to become donors have been key to the surge in the numbers from just 27 percent three years ago.

Baldwins

Helped register nearly 10,000 people

Secretary Johnson presented a Shining Star Award to a Port Huron couple on June 13 to recognize their tireless work to promote organ donation.

Steve and Heather Baldwin have a son who received a liver transplant in 1995. They have visited SOS offices hundreds of times to encourage people to sign up on Michigan's organ donor registry and have convinced nearly 10,000 to do so.
