The mighty Mackinac Bridge that joins Michigan's two peninsulas is prominently featured on a new license plate that the state began issuing on Aug. 29.
Motorists can purchase the strikingly colorful plate, which pictures the bridge against an orange sunrise sky over blue waters, for their vehicle for just $5 in addition to regular registration fees.
"The Mighty Mac is a symbol of American ingenuity and has a place in the hearts of Michiganians," said Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, who announced the plate in Aug. 2012 from the top of the bridge. "It doesn't matter how many times you've seen it, that moment when it comes into view, it's still breathtaking."

The new plate was heavily promoted at this year's Labor Day Bridge Walk. Secretary of State staff arranged with the Bridge Authority to have banners about the plate hung above the tollbooths in St. Ignace, where they have been seen by tens of thousands of motorists.
Staff also set up the ExpressSOS.com tent at the Walk and handed out bridge license plate magnets to thousands of participants. During his speech prior to leading more than 30,000 people across the bridge, Gov. Rick Snyder held up a 1TUFNRD plate and encouraged residents to get one for their vehicles.

Read a column by Secretary Johnson that recently ran in the Arab American News. Johnson encourages residents to consider using the many online services at ExpressSOS.com or other alternative avenues for transactions, rather than taking the time to come in to a Secretary of State branch office.
